Connections take place when we get close to people and not from 35000 feet up in the year. Draw closer to those around you and experience the power.

"As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment.” -John Steinbeck

We move through life at a pace comfortable with the progress we want to make. In search of our dreams we keep moving forward through the maze of others. The focus of that movement is towards the goals we have established for our lives.

Then one day you get tired of the movement, feeling that no progress is being made. We stop and wonder about our life which sometimes turns into self pity. All the while, life keeps moving past us even faster. We can stand on the side of the tracks watching the train go by, or choose to engage in the movement once again.

If we stop, as Steinbeck says, the moment becomes much more than a moment. So much opportunity passes us by if we adapt a victim mentality. The type of mentality that believes the whole world needs to stop for just them. But like the train, people will stop to see how you are doing. They will genuinely care for your situation but the train can not stay still for long. The whistle blows and the train leaves the station, leaving you standing alone once again.

Be willing to get back on board the train should you have had cause to pause for a moment or two. Choose not to be a victim in life and become fully part of it. Find out where the train can take you and experience the wonder of it.

"The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering." -Ben Okri

Nick Vujicic was born with no arms or legs but has in his life been able to overcome this challenge. In this video, he delivers an inspirational speech to school kids...one they will likely never forget.

There are so many things that could pull you down in life. There are things that tripped you up, knocked you down and are having you believe there is no way of getting back up.

It can be overcome, you can arise once again and carry forward. As Nick indicates, it doesn't matter how you do it or even how long it takes you. What matters is that you do it and that you finish strong.

Pick yourself up, dust off the pain of self-doubt and move forward. Keep moving and finish strong.

Ps Dean had a great message this past Sunday regarding the new year. I thought I would pick up on that message and add it to my blog today since many people need to hear it.

It certainly is a brand new year that is well under way and so many of us have set forth resolutions to accomplish this year. A large percentage will make a commitment to join a gym and working out. A survey sponsored by Weight Watchers found that 45 percent of Americans say losing weight will be their New Year's resolution for 2009 and 97 percent of those resolved to do so will need assistance to keep that resolution. The more telling statistic is that about 70 percent of new clients drop within a couple of months.

There will be many other types of resolutions; all well intentioned and for the betterment of one's life or surroundings. Setting goals and starting your walk towards change is a fantastic way to start the year. But the change doesn't come without a cost. It can be a difficult road and 'instant gratification' is what many people want.

Pastor Dean Sweetman has this saying which goes, "conception is fun but birthing is hard!" An amazing but very applicable statement to make in the context of trying to accomplish things in life. Much of what you will attempt in your new year resolution is supported by initial enthusiasm and excitement. You will be the first one in the gym using all of the various equipment.

The first week you are there every day, the pain is great but you know progress is being made. The weekend comes and you take a day or two off. The following week the stiffness is just a bit much so you tell yourself you should back off to only two or three days a week. Gradually you find yourself going less and less; finding more and more excuses not to go.

Long term commitment and 'habit' and are the keys to success in your new year's goals. As Ps. Dean said, the excitement of change in the new year is fun; the continued commitment to achieving the change is hard.

When you create habits in your life, they will become automatic. This is true for bad habits as well as good habits. Smoking was not an instant thing because you developed bad habits that will take time to remove from your life. Becoming more healthy will take time as well along with any of the other many changes you may want to make.

Be excited, be joyous that you are doing something great; yet be ready for the work it will take to create good habits in your life. Be ready to see your goal getting closer as you continue to work and achieve. Eventually you will get there and it will have seemed so automatic. Have a great and prosperous 2009!

"Shutting off the thought process is not rejuvenating; the mind is like a car battery -- it recharges by running." - Bill Watterson

So just how do batteries work? How is it possible that we can continually use up its energy only to recharge it and use it again and again?

The same can be said for our own attitude, the 'positive' goodness that we each want to possess inside. We gather up all of our great attitude and live life in an upward looking manner. But eventually, the 'full charge' that we once had can wear down.

If we are not careful, we find ourselves in a low point with little to feel good about. So how do we keep the our attitude at a great level?

We push through and keep ourselves surrounded by others with great attitudes. We read stories of greatness that others have written. We focus on what is good about lives and on what we can do to correct the hardship we may be encountering. We reiterate to ourselves the goals or visions we have for our lives.

We repeat it to ourselves as often as we can never give up. We keep moving because movement places us in a position for change and opportunity. The roller coaster ride that is life will take you down at times but it will also allow you to soar to great heights.

Keep your attitude charged and find ways to recharge it when the levels become too low. There will be a 'spark' of greatness by keeping your attitude charged.
